When new to social media it is unlikely you will have many followers, so why not try to build connections with them? Have chats or interact with their posts too! Show you are active in that network. This doesn’t even need to be a direct message, you could simply just put questions for your followers to reply to in the comments.
Tip:
You could even try retweeting the best answers to make your followers feel valued. If you use Tumblr, make sure to enable the “ask” function, so your followers can ask you questions.
Do live streams
Use Instagram voting polls e.g. ask followers to vote between 2 movies you could watch.
Snap chat what you're doing if interesting e.g. cooking
Hashtags: #hashtags are a form of social discovery on many medias, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These can be used to help you find people or encourage certain branding. This will also help others find you.
Memes: Images that are easily shared across social media, this is a good way to get noticed and to get your posts trending.

Ensure your posts are fresh and unique. try to keep posting what is already trending to a minimum. The social media is a fast pace market, trends don't last long so it is hard to catch the wave when it has been released. In addition, you will stand out a lot more if your posts are original.
Try to listen to your audience and if reasonable give them what they want. Ask if anyone has ideas for what they'd like you try next. This will create a sense of community on your media and keep fans engaged.
